A statement of hope: the story behind Oppi's newest baby shoes

Jane Trentham

There’s something so precious about watching a little baby’s unique personality emerge. They give us an honest glimpse of what’s hidden inside; an unashamedly pure expression.

What’s hidden peeps out

The joy of this emergence remains the inspiration for Oppi babywear having elements of the inside peeping out; a little revealing of what’s hidden beneath. Practically, this also means that many products are reversible as well; the inside can be turned through, giving more options for wearability.

The story behind the Revealed range

The latest range of Oppi baby shoes is a bit different. Still fully reversible, but this time the colourful fabric is on the outside and the plain Organic calico is tucked away.

They are playful, fun, bold and cheeky. But more than that:

I am calling them the ‘Revealed' range because they are something of a statement of hope.

My recent realisations and on-going research into the garment industry have led me to discover the sad existence of a form of modern day slavery. The awful realities which high-street brands try to hide from me are being uncovered by courageous journalists, organisations and social activists. One of whom is Safia Minney of People Tree.

We’re delighted to have been able to support Safia’s recent successful Kickstarter project, Slave to Fashion. The project will take Safia and her team to places in the industry that many wouldn’t dare go. They are seeking to shine a light on what’s hiding behind those scratchy clothing labels.

I want to believe that their project will bring a seed of hope to those who feel trapped in the garment industry. I want to believe that the wonderful, unique personalities of each of these garment workers will, over time, emerge as they are freed from this form of slavery.

This is why I have launched the Revealed range of Oppi baby shoes: that beauty which is currently hidden will be released and celebrated.
