The latest from Tutela Africa

Jane Trentham

While I've been stitching many little Oppi boots for winter here in England, it's been hot and sunny in Mozambique, and our partner's Tutela Africa have been holding more invaluable parenting classes. To let you know what they've been up to, here's an extract from their latest newsletter:

Our Tutela parenting course thrives in this colourful ambience, embracing the conditions that most mums, dads and children are living in. The course itself continues to be our main focus of investment in the communities around Maputo, and we have kicked off a new one last month with seventy fresh-faced mums and dads.

We are finding that it’s easy to involve the mums, as they are the main carers in the family home. In contrast to this, it is much trickier to get dads interested in attending the course, which reflects the general attitude that men in this culture have towards hands-on care for children. Hence, there are far fewer dads on the course, but the ones who do come are very involved in the discussions and keen to tackle the topics as much as the mums. This is an encouragement, and we feel like we’re having an impact.

We love the work that the Tutela Africa team are doing to support children, their parents and the wider community in Mozambique, and feel privileged to support them.
